Zoom is a popular platform where users can hold virtual meetings and calls. Since the Coronavirus pandemic, use of Zoom has soared, not only in the world of business but for socialising with friends and family too. If you are new to Zoom, it can feel a little intimidating getting to grips with how it works. Also, video calls are still flawed in that there may be glitches, time delays and distractions that happen on and off camera. This guide show you some top tips and tricks so you can use Zoom with confidence.

Camera Confidence

It is always an odd experience to view oneself on camera, but try not to let it phase you. Everyone else in the meeting will be having the same feeling, it’s just some people have found the knack to being confident on camera. One tip to make you feel more confident is to make sure you are positioned for the most flattering angle, such as the camera being at eye level or slightly above. Make sure your hair is tidy and wear something nice or professional, because if you look good, you feel good. Keep your body language relaxed, and you will look confident even if you don’t feel it.

If you feel really self-conscious, Zoom has a neat feature that allows you to improve your appearance by using a filter. A little like SnapChat, you can use it to smooth out your skin tone, reduce those puffy eyes and make yourself look a little brighter! Try it by going to settingsvideo, and then my video. You should see the touch up my appearance option. You can use the slider to increase or reduce the effect.

Sound and Audio

Whether you are using a laptop, PC, tablet or even a phone, always use headphones. This is because sound will echo in the microphone if it comes directly out of your device speakers. If you’ve ever heard your own voice at someone else’s end of a meeting, you will know that it is frustrating.

In addition, using a separate mic is a great option for adding a fuller sound to your voice. Many can simply be plugged in via USB, or there are some headphones that come with a mic attached

Etiquette

If you are in a meeting with multiple people, it is best to keep yourself on mute until you have something to say. This means that no one will be distracted by your dog barking, your children playing, or your house phone ringing! One neat trick is to use your settings so that the space bar on your keyboard instantly unmutes you if you press and hold it down, like the button of a walkie-talkie.

Dial in Feature

Not everyone wants to ‘hop on a video call’. Or, perhaps the location isn’t convenient for you to be on video. When you are invited to a Zoom meeting, there will also be a number that you can call from your phone, and this adds you to the meeting too. So, if you are stuck on public transport, are out walking, or somewhere with no internet, you can still participate in the meeting.

Virtual Background

This is a great feature that lets you hide the background of the room you’re in, and swap it for something else. Depending on the nature of the meeting, you could go for something simple and quiet so it’s not distracting, or go for full on colour or pattern for a more relaxed, fun vibe. Ideally, for backgrounds to work best you need a green screen, which is simple to create at home, yet many will work well without one.

Zoom is a platform with a host of features for any level of user. The ability to share your screen means you can present to a group, the whiteboard feature means you can work together on one page, and you may also be able to record the meeting or get a written transcript depending on the Zoom subscription level.

Mastering the art of Zoom just takes a little practise, so learn all you can about how the platform works and follow these hints and tips to make your next online meeting a breeze!
